Milpero

Or whatever name you’ve come to know this restaurant by, you should know that the original name was in the essence of corn. And therefore the art needed to be as well.

I was commissioned to create a custom piece for the Maize restaurant- Chef Johnny Curiel’s latest and most prestigious restaurant. He collaborated with a local Colorado farm to grow 2,500 pounds of heriloom blue, green and white corn. He wanted the beautiful kernels sewn to be featured in an art piece that could sit at the restaurants entrance.

So I took a few pounds of that corn and created a beaded tapestry incorporating designs featured in Huichol beadwork and yarn paintings from the Jalisco region.

Though not created in the traditional Huichol fashion of pressing beads into wax on a hard surface- my work is constructed of alternating vertical, horizontal and freeform strings of kernels, my approach draws on the tradition of beading in indigenous American cultures.

Maize- the english spelling for the grain commonly known as corn in North America.

Maiz- the Spanish name for corn.
